Jessie Kampman heads into European Championship medal series as leader
The Team Allianz athlete finished the opening series with a ten-point advantage over French rival Lauriane Nolot.
AKYAKA, Turkey – Jessie Kampman will enter the medal series of the European KiteFoil Championships as the overall leader on Saturday, September 12. The Team Allianz kitefoiler won two races on Friday in the Olympic discipline and finished the opening series with a ten-point advantage over French rival Lauriane Nolot.
Kampman made a strong start to the penultimate day of competition, winning the first two races before finishing second in the third. With the decisive medal series in mind, she chose to conserve her energy and did not start the fourth and final race of the day, recording it as her discard.
After 20 races and three discards, Kampman sits on 29 points. Nolot is second on 39 points, while Switzerland’s Elena Lengwiler occupies third place with 42 points.
“It was a really good day on the water,” Kampman said. “I won the first two races and finished second in the third. I did what I had planned to do, and it worked out really well. After that, I saved some energy for tomorrow. That’s why I didn’t start the final race and went back to shore earlier. I’m very happy with the day and I’m looking forward to the finals.”
Medal series decided over three stages
The medal series begins with a quarter-final for the athletes ranked sixth to tenth in the overall standings. The top two kitefoilers advance to the semi-final, where they will face the athletes ranked third, fourth and fifth after the opening series.
The top two from the semi-final then progress to the Grand Final, where they will join Jessie Kampman and Lauriane Nolot. As the top two athletes in the standings, Kampman and Nolot qualify directly for the Grand Final and each carry one match point into the final.
The Grand Final continues until one kitefoiler has accumulated two match points. The winner of each final race earns one match point. For Kampman, that means one Grand Final victory would be enough to win the competition and claim the European title.
